Iconic Hybrid Synthesizer for Modern Players
Get your creativity buzzing with the Wasp Deluxe from Behringer, an authentic reproduction of the famous late ’70s hybrid synthesizer. Sporting dual digital oscillators with an all-analog VCF and VCA signal path, a versatile LFO with 6 waveshapes, and two real analog EGs, this desktop synth offers an incredible and compact sonic toolkit. The multimode analog VCF provides variable waveform selection between sawtooth, square, and a unique Enhance mode, as well as Lo (low-pass) Hi (high-pass), Band (bandpass), and Notch filter modes. A noise generator provides an extra source of sound creation and modulation. With 29 hands-on controls, you can enjoy tactile response and an engaging sound crafting experience. The synth also includes plenty of I/O, including a 3.5mm input for processing external audio through the analog VCF/VCA circuitry, a headphone output, MIDI via 5-pin DIN or USB, and dedicated 1/4″ and 3.5mm main audio outputs. And with the ability to chain up to 16 units for 16-voice polyphony or remove the unit from its chassis for Eurorack integration, the possibilities are nearly endless.
A Legendary Synthesizer
The original Wasp, and its successor the Wasp Deluxe, were truly ground-breaking instruments for their time. Released in 1978 by Electronic Dream Plant, the Wasp was likely the very first synthesizer to use true digital oscillators; not samples or analog circuits, but true logic-based waveforms. These two digital oscillators were then fed into all-analog VCF and VCA circuitry for an incomparably fat and warm tone that, unlike analog synths of the time, was perfectly stable. While the original sported an infamously finnicky capacitive mini keyboard, the Wasp Deluxe improved on the design with a true keyboard and external audio processing. With as little as 80 Deluxes having been built, these extremely rare synths sell for a fortune on the used market today. Now you can have this legendary synthesizer that was made famous by the likes of Devo, Chick Corea, Jean-Michel Jarre, and Keith Emerson, for a truly affordable price.
True to the Original
Great care has been taken in designing the Wasp Deluxe, including the true to the original Wasp Deluxe circuitry. This is what gives it its ultraflexible sound-shaping capability, which covers everything from superfat bass and lead tones, stunning effects, and the otherworldly sounds of your imagination.
Variable Oscillators
Each of the two oscillators comes with three variable waveforms: sawtooth, square wave, and an enhanced mode which adds punch and some clarity to the oscillator’s tone. Both oscillators can be adjusted across a wide 5-octave range (32, 16, 8, 4, and 2’).Oscillator 1’s waveshape can be adjusted via the Width knob, while oscillator 2 has a Pitch control that can be adjusted against oscillator 1’s pitch to create some really sweet modulation effects. To top it all off, these can be mixed and blended together with an external audio signal to get a truly unique sound.
Even More Control
The Control Oscillator section is where things start to get really interesting. This section features a flexible LFO with six waveform shapes such as a sine wave, rising sawtooth, falling sawtooth, square wave, noise, and random, which can be further manipulated with the Frequency and Pitch knobs.A noise generator dramatically expands waveform generation and can be mixed in to create additional percussion sounds. The Wasp Deluxe also comes with a switchable multimode VCF with Lo, Hi, Band, and Notch filter options, as well as a Freq and Q setting, where you can play with the filter cutoff and width to get some really wild sounds, allowing you to add some spice to your music.
Pushing the Envelope
Next in the chain is where you can create some very intricate patches. The Wasp Deluxe has two analog envelope generators for modulating the VCA and VCF. The VCA Envelope section contains an Attack, Decay, Sustain Level/Repeat knob, as well as a hold switch that can be used to sustain a note indefinitely. The Control Envelope features Attack, Decay, and Delay/Repeat knobs. Set these just right to get millisecond-quick notes ala Kraftwerk, or create long atmospheric synth beds just like Vangelis in Bladerunner.
16-Voice Polychain Ready
While it is a monophonic instrument (one note at a time), Wasp Deluxe’s 16-note poly-chain function lets you combine multiple synthesizers for up to 16-voice polyphony. You also get vastly improved reliability and stability over its 1970’s predecessor.
Eurorack Ready
Designed to handle the rigors of life on the road or in the studio, your Wasp Deluxe can easily be transferred into a standard Eurorack case for the perfect integration into your existing system.
